How I think about it

Five short reads. The beliefs behind everything I do with clients. Two minutes each.

Motivation

Motivation turns up after you start, never before

Everyone waits to feel like it. You only ever get motivation after you've done something. One session, one planned day, one week logged. Then it shows up. That's why I'm nobody's motivation. I'm the plan and the check-in that gets you to do the first bit, so the motivation has something to follow.

Lifestyle

It's not a lifestyle until you've lived a full year of it

First Christmas. First holiday. First birthday, first wedding, first stag do. You won't have a clue how to manage any of them until you've been through them with a plan. That's why I coach for months, not 12 weeks. The 12 week version works until real life turns up, and then it's gone.

Optimal

Optimal is the wrong target

The closer you get to perfect, the duller your life gets. I coach to the grey zone in the middle: lean, strong and full of energy, with the pizza night, the pub and the family meals still in. A pace you can hold beats a sprint you can't, every time.

Food

Food isn't good or bad. It's just calories

There are no naughty foods and you don't need to hide anything from your food diary. Log what you actually eat and we work with it. The family takeaway on a Friday stays. We just plan the week around it.

Family

Looking after yourself isn't selfish

Not feeding yourself properly, not training and not sleeping isn't you putting the family first. It's the opposite. It's the thing that makes you short on patience, short on energy and short of an example. Do it, for them.
